Field notes

The failures that became rules.

The first reports came from a voluntary call: photos, short videos, and written notes. Names of children are not shown. Later pattern titles come from the same collection. They are not presented here as separately cited public studies.

Trash-eating monster

Wood glue dried slowly, cutting card with scissors was hard, and the evening ran long enough that the maker wanted to stop.

Feeds TIME-001

Airplane from a soda bottle

Paint would not hold on the bottle until a glue layer went down first. The wings were difficult to attach.

Feeds JOINT-003

Chicken craft

Finding a cutting pattern and then assembling the pieces both stalled the build.

Feeds DATA-001

Airplane without clips

Nothing held the parts while the glue dried, so a parent had to take over assembly.

Feeds TIME-001

Chocolate holder

Paper would not sit on the curved bottle.

Feeds JOINT-003

Sound toy from bottle caps

Piercing caps and threading string through narrow holes. Made with a five-year-old and their mother, about 30 minutes.

Feeds SIZE-001

Iron Man with a five-year-old

Cutting and gluing needed the adult. The child still signed the finished figure.

Feeds SUP-12

Precision without a plan

The build asked for more accuracy than the tools and the template provided.

Keep blades on a tray, not on the floor beside a child.Caps and tiny decorations stay in a cup until an adult fixes them.Threading a band through a bottle cap is an adult step.Cap wheels need a stopper so they cannot slide off.Spray cans, grinders, and mains power stay out of the plan.An open flame is not a classroom material.Cutting a plastic bottle is adult work. Check the edge.Paint on a smooth bottle needs a wash, a dry, and a scrap test.Fold or tape every wire end before children handle the piece.A wall piece needs a named fastener. Do not guess the load.A piggy bank is unproven until a real coin fits and the box does not tip.Edited videos hide drying time. Write the wait into the plan.
